Up With Montana, Boys!

Down with the foe!

IMG_2186

Yes, that is the University of Montana state fight song and last weekend as we rolled past the border into the big sky state, my mother began singing it. Not because anyone in our fam is a “Grizz”, but because Hamilton, Montana is the birthplace and home of my dear and recently deceased grandmother, Dorothy Davis. Last weekend, we made the trip to this beautiful state to bury her ashes and say our final goodbyes to this little lady who’s simple life I admire so very much.

Born in 1919 and popularly referred to as G-Dot, Dorothy lived to be the ripe ol’ age of 94. She was sassy. And spirited. She ruled the circle at seated kickball.

Chloe loved her too!

At the memorial, my aunt and mom read some of her beautiful writings and clever poetry. We reminisced her younger years, filled with golf, oil painting and plenty of Wonder Bread. We took a moment to remember all that she was – a devoted Christian woman, who may have had small-town views but NEVER judged. And all that she wasn’t – a gourmet chef or lover of spicy foods. She married my grandfather after only 3 months of dating, only to say goodbye to him 2 days after their wedding so he could fight in WW2.

She was a woman who had chronic acid indigestion, who hated losing at rummy and who I will miss each day of my life.

The memorial was perfect and seeing my great aunt Maxine was even better.

But enough of the sad! On to the good! It is after-all, what G-Dot would have wanted.

In lieu of getting a hotel in the tiny town of Hamilton, we opted to rent a house via VRBO. We drove out into the sticks and after a few wrong turns, pulled into the driveway of the house (click here for the posting). The exterior looked pretty nondescript but after opening the front door it was clear we were in Montana. Knotty pine finishes enveloped walls laden with mounted fish, mallard art and cowboy paraphernalia. Chochkies rattled as I walked by every old-english polished surface. This place was a gem.

We immediately noticed the cool old barn outside and wisely headed out for a photo sesh and subsequent lols. Feast your eyeballs.

I can’t handle Meg’s face

The house was great, save for the fact that the 7,000 inch television required a PhD in technology to operate and the heat wouldn’t work the last day. Although, the heat not working may have been a blessing in disguise since it forced us to start a fire (with wood, you know) and pretend we were on Little House on the Prairie.

We found the world’s oldest K-Mart and contemplated buying matching thermal PJ’s for .99 cents. Oh, and this hat.

Girls Weekend in Leavenworth

One of the best things about playing volleyball for the majority of my life has undoubtedly been the friends I have made.

Ladies who will be my lifelong buddies. My posse. My PICs, yo.

ry3D400

THROWBACK

Three of those ladies, I got to meet up with last weekend – for a delightful 2 night stay in Leavenworth, the little Bavarian mountain town right smack dab in the middle of the state.

My pal Carey was kind enough to organize a short stay at the wonderful Sleeping Lady Resort, a small and completely charming little cluster of cabins nestled comfortably in the trees. Carey is SO good at these kinds of things. Nails it ‘err time.

From the website

I arrived on Friday night, after a two hour drive through the snow. Bryan drove me because he is nice and because I am the worst driver ever my driving skills need work.

We had dinner at Kingfisher restaurant and it felt SO great to be back with my girls. We had wine, great food(albeit, expensive) and ended up closing the place down.

173255_253989_1393264545671 173255_253989_1393264558419

Back in the room we sat around in the AMAZINGLY soft beds, sipping wine, eating chocolate and talking about issues such as full-bottomed underwear and the best wrinkle cremes. I realized, yeah – we’re definitely not 20 anymore. We are women. W-O-M-E-N. We have husbands (and fiances). We have children. And mortgages and our backs hurt.

173255_253989_1393264536655

Although so much has changed within the four of us, our friendships have remained the same. Conversations pick up right where they left off. We wish we could be at every birthday party, job promotion celebration, or major life event for one another. But we can’t. So we text and we call. And sometimes we don’t even do that. But we all know that no matter what happens, we’re still there.

OMG you guys this is sooooooooo sappy. Okay. On to the rest of the weekend before I puke.

The next morning I awoke to the musical stylings of Bekah, who will NEVER disappoint me with her half made up/half real songs and little jigs. What a gem, she is! Getting out the door is challenging with us, it’s like herding cats. Everything takes 1,000 more minutes than it should. In this case, it was totally my fault, but eyeliner application will do that to ya.

We headed into the town for lunch at Munchen Haus for brats and a round of pints. The place was buzzing despite the low temps and so we quickly grabbed a table and clinked our steins.

The local beer went down real nice and then we all bought chocolates. Oh lawd – SO bavarian.

Then we decided it was time to head back to the hotel to warm our buns in the hot tub. We rang for plastic cups, popped the champagne and headed down the path to the outdoor hot tub lookin DAMN SEXY.

The four of us alone in the hot tub with champagne- you can guess what went down. A FULL ON Kelly Kapowski style swimsuit competition, where each of us pulled the sides of our bottoms up past our hip bones and slooowly walked up the steps out of the hot tub. So. Hot.

After hot tubbing, we headed back to our room to change for our dinner at The Grotto. The interior was quite cozy, with a fully stocked bar and  a menu offering a modest selection of small plates, pizzas and calzones.

IMG_2017

IMG_2018

Little Pink Unicorn!?!? OMGGG

My calzone was decent. Nothing great. I may a bit biased however, because Bryan happens to make the best pizza ever and his dough is particularly scrumptious.

IMG_2021

After dinner, we skipped dessert in lieu of wine and chocolate back in our little cabin. The highlight of the evening had to be Holly re-living her childhood dream of starring in the “Hold On”  music video by Wilson Philips. She acted out the whole thing, complete with serious/sad faces and it was AWESOME. After, we all huddled around Carey’s cell phone (the ONLY one of us who had reception) and watched the real music video, and I must say…Holly nailed it.

fridayfrag2

The next morning we woke up to falling snow and the sadness that our weekend was coming to a close. We group hugged for a solid 5 minutes (which isn’t weird to us, or anyone who has played volleyball, btw) and said our goodbyes. It was truly a weekend of love, deep conversation and large sausages.

It was sad, but in the paramount words of Wilson Phillips…

Hold on for one more day….

Ski Trip to Whistler

OH CANADA!

Is it bad that I know only two words of the Canadian national anthem? Perhaps. Because a couple weeks ago, Bry and I paid a visit to our neighbors of the north in the form of an epic 3-day skiing spectacular!

We left early Friday morning, the Jeep brimming with all our crap. I settled right in to the passenger seat and navigated us fell asleep all the way there! We arrived at the Cascade Lodge around 2 pm and were able to check in early. Our room was somewhat modest, but did have a kitchenette as well as a fireplace and decent-sized soaking tub so all was well. We tucked away our brews, vodka and nerd ropes safely and decided to head out into the “village” to grab our ski passes for the next day.

IMG_1955

You guys. Whistler Village is just so unbelievably charming. Restaurants, bars, shops, all staffed by friendly (and mostly European) folks with lovely accents. Why does EVERYTHING sound more appealing when described by a dreamy, wavy-haired Aussie? WHY?

20140214_145134_resized

After we picked up our ski passes, we went back to our hotel to get gussied.

IMG_1959

Such a snow bunny right now

IMG_1960

Obligatory fireplace shot

Then we naturally headed to the Irish Pub, The Dubh Linn Gate.

The Whiskey Richards performed (get it?) while Bry and I chugged our pints atop teetery bar stools. I did a jig. Because, I mean. Why would I not?

IMG_1965

I was dying to go in every. single. store but I had to practice restraint as Bryan does not fare well in crowded shopping situations. Especially at L’Occitane. Or Lululemon. Or anywhere besides REI. He did approve a quick stop-off at my absolute biggest shopping weakness – LUSH. The store was giant, empty and looked after by two of the most charming girls in the world. One had a British accent which of course didn’t hurt their cause.

20140214_154025_resized

I picked up one solitary Rose Queen bath bomb and we were on our merry way back to the hotel.

Then we headed down to the hot tub. And can I just say, I haaaate getting in hot tubs at hotels. You start climbing in and everyone is just sitting there, safely under the bubbling water as you uncomfortably stammer down the steps and hope you don’t trip and accidentally show a little nip. Then you settle in and aren’t sure whether you should acknowledge that you have joined the tub, look off to the side or (like me) realize that someone has probably peed (or worse) in there.

That night, we walked around for a bit and then had dinner at Carramba’s.

IMG_1962

IMG_1964

Bryan can’t believe it!

Really, we just wanted pizza and this place had it. We had a margarita and pesto + goat cheese. Delish.

IMG_1968

IMG_1967

The next morning we woke up relatively early to attack our one and only day on the slopes. I was a nervous wreck, as the last time I had been on skis was 2 years ago. I reminded myself to keep a positive disposition for as long as possible. It was going to hurt. I would want to quit. I would be cold. So I sucked it up, got myself ready and we headed for the gondy.

The line was soooooo long. As a person who has only skiied at Jackson Hole and Sun Valley, I now realize how spoiled I was with lift lines. Since Whistler is so close to 2 major metropolitan areas, you end up waiting forever.

But the runs are worth it.

Right off the bat, I LOVED the fact that there were so many green runs. For any newbie skier or boarder, this is huge. Jackson Hole literally offers ONE lowly green run and it is super short. Whistler is massive and therefore, offers people a huge variety of terrain to ski. Like a good fiance, Bryan dutifully stuck by my side, reminding me to keep my feet on the ground (I have a tenancy to stand on my tippy toes), not pick up my skis as I turn and USE my poles!

Whistler

Look at those lovely greens!

I completed the first run and as expected, my muscles were screaming. I cursed the day I decided not to sign up for the free ski fitness classes offered at my gym as I shamelessly bent over my ski poles to try and relieve ANY pain I could from my legs. Despite the fact that I was wearing a modest base-layer, fleece gaiter and ski jacket I was POURING in sweat. And this was only the first run. MAN I wish I had taken a selfie with my hair plastered to my forehead for you guys. But there was no energy. NONE.

IMG_1969

hahaa

After the first run, we headed back up and went in for a hot chocolate. Loosening my boots felt like heaven and I just wanted to stay there. Inside. With slippers and an iPad :).

IMG_1970

20140215_111722_resized
snagletooth

But I went back out and the next two runs went wonderfully. I was turning like it was my job (if my job entailed making beginner turns on corduroy green runs) and actually having fun! I even did some ski-humps <- air humping while skiing. It’s a skill.

unnamed (2)

I was also starting to cool down. Mostly because my nerves stopped going ape-sh*t on me, and I started to relax into my boots a little. We had lunch in the most packed lodge of all time, seriously, it was CRAZY.My noodley legs were shot and so it was decided that I would download from the gondy. But we were pretty far from it. So Bryan grabbed a map and routed the easiest way down. What he failed to tell me was that it was about 218921371203 feet away.

20140215_100147_resized

I started out okay, making decent turns and keeping my composure somewhat. But after about 5 minutes, my legs were just PISSED at me and I began to lose it. Any “form” I had went completely out the door. My ski tips were crossing and my pace was all over the place. Buckets of sweat were pouring down my chest and back like hot flashes on acid. My nose was a faucet, soaking my gaiter and then immediately freezing to my face.

I skidded to a halt in front of the gondola and realized I was sufficiently upset. I was upset at my legs, my godforsaken boots and most of all – my sweat glands. I hastily muttered a “see ya” to Bryan, snapped my skis off and stumbled onto the gondola. While Bryan skiied for another 40 minutes or so, I rode down to the base, desperately trying to mop the sweat from my brow and pound out the muscle knots in my legs.

Somehow I managed to  schlep my skis back to our hotel, all the while muttering and cursing to myself à la Joe Pesci. I peeled the layers of clothing from my body and literally wanted to cast them into the fire. After a quick, warm shower, I slipped into fresh clothes and met Bryan at the Longhorn for my favorite part about skiing – après!

20140215_153749_resized

A pitcher later and we we headed over to Citta for another round of drinks. When in Rome, my friends.

Afterwards, we headed back to our hotel so we could get in a good amount of hot tub time. Well, the tubs were PACKED. It was like cesspool of sweaty snowboarders who smelled like ham and cheese. NO THANKS. Instead, I opted to utilize my new bath bomb in our room and take my relaxi-taxi there.

And the Rose Queen bath bomb is just that. The BOMB.

03573

That night, Bryan and I prepped ourselves to “go out”. 22 year old style. We were determined to prove to our 30-year-old selves that we still had it, goddammit. So, we began by taking naps at 6:30 PM. We each slept for about an hour and then took showers and got ready.

After TEE SHIRT TIME (teehee) we ventured to Village Sushi for dinner. The wait was long – nearly 45 minutes, but the food was great and also a good price. We were seated around 9:30 PM and finished eating around 10:30. Whistler is like, très European. Restaurants still take reservations at 10:30 PM and aren’t pushy about getting their tabes turned. We felt SO cool finishing our dinners at 10:30.

After dinner, we headed to the Irish Pub …again, and had a few burrs. Once we felt sufficiently tipsy, we decided we were juuuust inebriated enough to attack da “club”. So, we went to Garfinkles and immediately ordered a vodka + redbull. As you can probably guess, things just got hilarious. We danced a little, we people watched. Twas magical.

ls

Around 2 AM, we left the club and it was just about that time for SECOND DINNER. I shuffled back to the hotel, drank 7 glasses of water and peeled off my false eyelashes while dear Bryan braved the cold (at my insistence, haha) to pick up a Dominos. I scarcely remember stuffing 4 pieces in my mouth and then promptly PTFO.

I was then rudely reminded of my 30 years of age around 4 AM. Standing up, my head pounded, my feet ached and my hands were trembling. After a 5 minute teeth scrubbing and thorough floss, I popped in my mouth guard like the teeth-grinding, adult that I am. 123894 more glasses of water. 4 IB’s. And sleep. Lots of it.

The next morning we begrudgingly got out of bed and dragged our sorry asses out for coffee. Although I was surly and sick, I felt a pang of pride. I did it!

We went to Purebread for coffee + pastries and my hangover raged as the boy behind the counter told me they didn’t offer brewed coffee. Espresso only. ‘Scuze me, Broseph, an americano IS NOT the same as a slow roasted cuppa drip. You don’t know who are dealing with, sir.

20140216_104558_resized

We shared an apricot + vanilla bean scone which was heavenly and then went back to the hotel to get ready for our day. A stop at Starbucks was necessary after our subpar americanos and I gulped down a venti water. We strolled along for some time, popping in various shops and relishing the beautiful day.

IMG_1975

20140216_121326_resized

Respect the Chemistry Point

We stopped for lunch at the Brew Pub and were lucky enough to get a table right next to the fire! We had a burger with fries and a salad and all I could think about was that it was NAP TIME. I convinced Bry to go back to the hotel where we had a hot tub and snoozed for a couple of glorious hours.

After I woke up, I determined the only cure for the hangover I STILL had was of course, more LUSH products. So, we walked down to the shops and I scored this amazing set which I had a gift card to nearly cover the cost of (thanks KC and Bry!):

IMG_1976

IMG_1977

I took a bath and we headed out for dinner around 8 to Araxi. We ended up getting a seat in the lounge and having a witty french server who blinked alot. I loved him. We had this delicious appetizer:

IMG_1980

Dungeness Crab Roll in Egg Crepe
wrapped with cold smoked wild salmon, watercress and yuzu mayonaise in an egg crepe with avocado and tomatillo salsa verde

And Bryan ordered the sablefish as his entree. I stuck to the butternut squash soup, 7,000 rolls with butter and plenty of water. Dinner was really lovely with the snow slowly falling outside the windows. After dinner we REALLY wanted the ice cream at Cow’s but they were just closing :(.

The next day we left town after a quick breakfast at BG Urban Grille. Whistler got a ton of snow on Sunday and Bryan definitely DID NOT want to leave. But contrary to how we acted the night prior, we are adults. Who have jobs. And mortgages. And horrible hangovers.

Til next time, Canada!

What We Ate in Maui

I don’t know how food bloggers do it.

Re-living all these meals for this post had me salivating. Literally. I have swallowed like twice as much as usual #TWSS.

But anyways, here’s what we ate in Maui. I realize we went in October and that I don’t have pictures for every single meal. DEAL WITH IT.

Friday – Sansei Restaurant

We went here our first night in Maui for two reasons: the online reviews and it’s close proximity to our condo in Kapalua. Oh! And I wanted sushi the worst. We ended up eating here twice it was so good.

We had:

    • Edamame
    • California Roll
    • Spicy Tuna Roll
    • Spider Roll

Saturday: Cheeseburger in Paradise

This place is a Nash family tradition and one that Bryan and I upheld. We each got the classic “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, split a basket of fries and had mai tais. Hit the spot.

IMG_1581

IMG_1582

Sunday: Aloha Mixed Plate

IMG_1588

We went here after I had read tons of good reviews online, praising it’s Hawaiian-style menu. The prices were cheap and the food, delicious. I ordered the Aloha Mixed Plate, which came with chicken, beef and fish with two scoops of white rice and macaroni salad. Bryan had fish tacos but definitely wished he had stuck to the original.

Monday: Merriman’s

Bryan wanted to try this place out since we were staying in Kapalua and we heard great things about the food. Well, to say we were impressed would be an understatement. After dining here, we decided to cancel our reservation at Mama’s Fish House since our desire for gourmet food, amazing service and beautiful surrounding had already been satisfied.

The amuse bouche:

We shared:

      • Warm Crusted Big Island Goat Cheese: Kula Strawberries, Maui Onions, Strawberry and Garden Mint Vinaigrette

Tuesday: Leilani’s
DSCN4659
I feel like Sydney Fife from I Love You, Man when I talk about the fish tacos at Leilani’s. They are on-another-planet good. It is planetary. You get me. We ate here twice because of the fish tacos. Once for dinner and then for lunch. Oh, and we also ordered a caesar for balance.

Wednesday: Mala Ocean Tavern

We dined here after a recommendation from Bryan’s mom and found it to be completely charming. Maybe a tad overpriced but perhaps we just ordered too much? Sitting on the deck was awesome and so were the fresh-made chips and pureed edemame they brought to the table.
DSCN4684
For dinner we ordered:

    • Mark’s Hydroponic Caesar Waipoli Caesar Salad: Flax seed croutons, white anchovy and grated egg
    • Fresh Mahi Mahi Special
    • Ahi Tuna Sausage Flatbread with goat cheese

Thursday breakfast was none other than Krispy Kreme.

IMG_1595

For dinner we went right on back to Sansei!
This time it was:

      • Edamame
      • Sansei’s Shrimp Dynamite: Crispy tempura shrimp tossed with creamy garlic masago aioli and drizzled with an unagi glaze
      • Bagel Roll
      • Panko Crusted Ahi Sashimi Sushi Roll: Sashimi grade Hawaiian ahi, arugula and spinach wrapped into a sushi roll, panko crusted, flash-fried and served with Sansei’s mild soy wasabi butter sauce
      • Takah Sushi Special Roll Named in Honor of Takah Sama, Aspen, Colorado: Shrimp, ahi, crab, avocado and cucumber, inside-out and crusted with masago

Friday: I’O

We went here on a recommendation from our server at Hula Grille and were SO glad we did. The food was totally amazing, as was the service and the view. Totes romantic.

We shared:

      • I’o Crab Cakes: Panko crusted crab and goat cheese cakes with roasted red bell peppers, garlic and a caramelized Maui onion and miso aioli with green papaya slaw

DSCN4715

      • Waipoli Road Salad : Assorted O’o Farm greens & vegetables, fresh herbs, Olowalu tomatoes with Maui onions and feta cheese tossed in a citrus mustard vinaigrette

DSCN4713

    • Rainbow Catch Mahi Mahi: Oven roasted fish with a lemongrass pesto & Olowalu tomatoes, goat cheese fondue sauce & white truffle oil accent over rice and dill cucumber salad

DSCN4717
For dessert we went to Lappert’s for ice cream and slowly made the way back to the car by stopping under the banyan tree. I could do this every single day of my life.

So here. They. Are.

Makeup

  3. Anastasia Eye Brow Pencil in Ash Blonde – Really want to upgrade to the Brow Wiz, but not until I use up this pup.
  4. Coola Tinted Sunscreen in SPF 20 – I really liked this organic sunscreen. In fact, this is the kind of sunblock they offered at the Spa.
  5. Covergirl Ink It Eyeliner in Black – Love this eyeliner. Stays put and is VERY black.
  6. Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette in Light – One of my all-time favorite concealers. I love the setting powder and the multitude of shades was nice to have.

Beauty Products

  1. Biotin – Gotta take my pretty pills.
  2. Kenra Volume Hairspray – Such a nostalgic smell for me. Reminds me of getting ready for homecoming in high school. And the formula is nice.
  3. Pacifica Coconut Crushed Pearl Bronzing Body Lotion – SUCH a beautiful and delicious smelling lotion. Absolutely obsessed.
  4. Moroccon Oil – Holy grail hair oil. Nothing else will do.
  5. Pssssst! Dry Shampoo – This is just meh. Not as good as Batiste.
  6. Dove Deo – Smells great, but not as good as this one.
  7. Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect Sunblock in SPF 20 – Obsessed with the smell. The shimmer is pretty but I wouldn’t re-purchase this formulation.
  8. Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray – Have YET to find a beach spray I’m in love with. This one is ok and added a little oomph to my already salty locks.
  9. Q-Tips – Duh.
  10. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion – No crazy smells and does the job.
  11. L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Lotion in Deep/Dark – My favorite drugstore self-tanner BY FAR. Just wish it didn’t have the sparkle because it is INTENSE.

Mkay that is all. What do you bring on vacation?

Maui Extravaganza

I’ve got two tickets to paradise! Pack your bags, we’re leaving the day-after-tomorrow!

scotto

Oh, Mr.Scott!

So, YEAH. We got back on Sunday and no part of me was ready for returning to this season of leaves, pumpkins and people dressing up as Miley Cyrus for Halloween.

Not to worry though. I have my wonderful sunburns mems to keep me warm! And really, I’m kidding. This girl did not get one, solitary sunburn. Save for a slighter beiger shade of, well, beige and a few freckles splashed across my nose – I remain your loyal, pasty-white internet friend.

I am scheming up a few different posts to break up what I fear could be a post longer than the script of Hoop Dreams, for your reading pleasure. Indeed, a grand synopsis will kick-off this whirling dervish of sand, sun and of course, rum.

We arrived in Maui on Friday. Our complimentary drinks at the United Club Room pre-flight made for an excellent way to pass the time during the 5.5 hour trip by (you guessed it) sleeping. Drinks at 9 am? YES.

IMG_1545

The air in Hawaii is my favorite air. If the air they sold in that movie The Lorax was from Hawaii, I would be their #1 customer. The thick humidity may as well be 1,000 plumeria-scented baby fairies, kissing my entire body. Now, THERE’s a visual. But you get the idea, I LOVE it.

We fell into our usual (usual. ha. this was only my second visit) routine of hitting Costco to stock up on necessities booze for the 9 glorious days ahead. $175 later we had in our cart:

  • 2 kinds of chips
  • Salsa
  • Booty
  • Bread
  • Cheese
  • Pineapple
  • Bag o limes
  • Bag o lemons
  • Handle of vodka
  • Handle of tequila
  • 24 cans of Bud Light

‘cessities

We stayed at the Kapalua Villas on Maui. They was nice.

The trip was full of discovery.

Like discovering the amazing beaches we were right next to.

Or grosser things like the teeny tiny geckos that speckle the sidewalks and don’t move until your foot is literally 1 centimeter away from it.

Discovering the fact that you can’t leave even 1 solitary piece of booty on the counter or else ants will come.

I discovered that I love the show LOCKUP because seeing these people makes any problem you have just melt away.

I discovered that spending a day at the Kapalua Spa is what heaven must be like. READ: waterfall shower, sauna, steam room, unlimited towels, robes, spa slippers, high-end sunblock, and body care products. I almost brought zip-lock baggies and just pumped away at that free lotion.

Oh! And one other thing. All week, we kept noting the crazy amount of runners and cyclists around the hood. I know Maui is conducive to runners and other exercise enthusiasts, but the staggering numbers of all these fit beings led us to believe something fishy was going on.

Well, we were right.

The supposed islands of curvaceous, tanned hula girls was now inundated with the thin, muscular silhouettes of professional triathletes from all of the world. Men in teeny speedos yelling “Ciao!” with the confidence of Peter Jackson at an Elf Convention.

We were able to watch the beginning of the triathlon before we left on Sunday, which began with a 1-mile “rough water swim”. As the frail bodies emerged from the water, making their speedy transitions on to their pristine mountain bikes I looked down at the small stomach ponch that had formed just above the waistline of my shorts…and then I had another margarita 🙂

I also happened upon some re-discoveries.

Like the fact that my fiance is THE BEST bartender this side’the Mississippi.

And the fact that I still enjoy dancing to Britney Spears solo after 2 margaritas.

I re-discovered how hard it is to completely remove sand from all crevasses of the body.

That IZ has a voice that could bring world peace.

I re-discovered why I love this beautiful, lush island. Oh, and wore this tank:

Aloha for now! And mahalo 🙂

Honorary Coug

Football has been the theme of these past couple weekends. Other theme contenders: deep fried foods, beer, sweat or a combination of the three. My inner sports fanatic was unleashed. Normally being the type of football spectator who is more interested in the glitter on the helmets than the score of the game, I have definitely surprised myself.

On Friday, we traveled to Bryan’s alma-mater WSU for a weekend of college fun. And fun, we had. The drive over was quite the adventure.

Highlights include:

  • Bry and Joe in the backseat car-dancing to their hearts delight.
  • Corbin’s and my eye-rolls after said car-dance moves.
  • Rolling across the Palouse, during what may have been the most beautiful sunset ever.
  • This barn.

Once we reached Pullman it was ON. We stopped at Sella’s for their epic calzones and 64 oz. beers. Because they were necessary.

Gettin Fratty

We checked in to the hotel and rendezvoused with our posse – Leann, Melissa, Little M, and Kyle. It was then decided that it was time for THE COUG.  A WSU institution, The Coug is a virtual melting pot where students from all corners of campus collide into one sweaty, beer-drinking mass of crimson-and-gray-wearing fanatics.

SO cute, we are.

Having already consumed one or four a few more beers m’self, I took er relatively easy. I wore my crimson. I perspired. I was well on my way to inevitable Coug-dom. We called it a night around midnight and cabbed it back to the Holiday Inn for a good night’s sleep in preparation for an epic day of WSU fun.

The morning kicked off with another WSU-Alum rite-of-passage, the Holiday Inn free continental breakfast. Sugary fruit loops, bagels chalked full of preservatives . Cinnamon rolls so perfectly drizzled with bright white icing that it could only be plucked straight from the clear packaging where it lay nestled, frozen amongst hundreds of clones in a cardboard box.

My heaven.

We played with babies Els and M in the hallway. I could seriously play with these gals everyday.

After a twist of the curling iron and a set of whispy half lashes, we headed over to Crimson & Gray where school spirit is the name of the game. This store has anything and everything Coug. Camo coug. Pink coug. 1/2 Coug, 1/2 Husky. ANYTHING.

After that, we packed up the car and headed over to campus for a much-anticipated tour.

Cutest Tour Guide.

I saw The Cub and subsequently the PEP BAND. Oh law. I luuurve me some pep bands. Or marching bands. Any band will do.

Music Building – Woo hoo!

We then descended upon the majesty that is Bryan’s fraternity. I have to admit, ABC Family’s Greek left my expectations for what a fraternity looks like a bit skewed. Visions of deep, mahogany walls dressed in masculine oil paintings of brothers from yesteryear faded into bare concrete, boy smells and a bowl of Captain Crunch left sitting in a window sill. While Theta Chi was  far from a pure paradigm of my brain’s version of a fraternity, one thing was painstakingly clear. Fun is and was had in this house. Memories were made and lifelong friendships were formed. Which to me is far more important than boring guys in navy sport coats and surfaces reeking of Lemon Pledge.

Then, Melissa was kind enough to take me to her sorority Chi Omega. As I walked in the doors, I was all “Elle Woods? Are you here?”. I was elated that one of the members volunteered to give us a house tour and provide me (the sorority-girl who never was) a tiny glimpse inside a real sorority.

Twas more than I could have ever imagined. Favorites included the “getting ready rooms” where girls are provided a closet, dresser and day bed in shared rooms where they can store all their bits & pieces. The makeup-obsessed, wanna-be beauty pageant contestant inside of me was shrieking in excitement but I think I managed to contain my enthusiasm because really, the idea of these rooms is quite pragmatic.

After our house tour concluded, we thanked our lovely tour guide and I gave serious thought to getting a face lift so I could go back to college just to be in a sorority.

Walking back to The Coug I couldn’t help but notice a couple of startling trends among today’s female youth, The high-waisted short and huge t-shirts made in to dresses. Let me start by saying that just because you like a trend does not (by any means) mean that you should go ahead and wear it.

We have all fallen victim to such trends and I have resigned to the fact that I, like so many others, had a mullet.

High-wasted shorts absolutely swarmed the WSU campus and lemme just tell you, it was as if the girls from “Hey Dude” were reincarnated.  Oh lord. Hey Dude. For all you Generation Y’ers out there: HOW MUCH DO YOU MISS HEY DUDE?

heydude

I blame Pinterest for the XXL t-shirts fashioned into corset-style lace-up tube dresses. COME ON ladies, stop abusing Pinterest.

Once we grew hungry, we all ordered lunch. A Coug burger + fries for Bryan and obviously a corn dog for me.  Fried to a deep golden brown and dipped in ranch. Oh sweet baby Jesus, it was GOOD.

Since The Coug now serves hard-alcohol (a recent and controversial addition) I happily sipped a double vodka/soda in lieu of beer. Oh. And this.

IMG_1459

I sweated and had a blast hobnobbing (jeez, I am old) with our friends. Then…it was GAME TIME B*TCHES.

We headed to Martin Stadium and found our seats in the hot sun. The first half was good and bad. Good because the Cougs were cleaning house with Southern Utah. Bad because my face was melting off.

Little M and her baby-sized foam finger

During halftime we hydrated with $5 waters and walked back to the car with little M. Who needs sports entertainment when you have an adorable toddler to play with?

“Hey Mom – over here!!”

IMG_1469

She might be the cutest thing in the world.

Not surprisingly, the Cougs beat southern Utah 48-10. We determined the celebration would be held at the hotel with a massive pizza and beer.

Our hotel room party was quite the rager. Complete with baby monitors and tired soon-to-be 30 somethings. My bestie Holly and her boyfriend Matt (who live in Moscow, ID) joined the mix and good ol’ fashioned hotel-room fun was had.

The next morning we said farewell to Kyle, Melissa and little M and hit the road, Seattle bound.

A little bit heavier and a lot Cougier. Til next time Pullman!
