Haul for Hawaii

Guess who got her hair did?

The before. Sad Clown.

And on to the haul!

DISCLAIMER: These items were all purchased for under $50.

“Typical” YouTuber hauls usually amount to hundreds of dollars (yes, I add things up in my head as they go) and a large amounts of nice things. But chy’all know me. A girl who is tickled by an armload of books “free” from the Library. A girl whose heart starts beating at the mention of “an additional 70% off the lowest-marked price”.

So, when I pulled out the ol’ suitcase to start packing for Hawaii and realized I HATED all my summer clothes/swimsuits – I determined I should get a couple things to spruce ‘er up. Here’s what I found:

Target

Swimsuits

14278940_121121050000I also got the bottoms in this style. I chose this because the top was $7.98 and the bottoms were $5.86. Oh, and because it is push-up. DUH.

14754590This one, I only got the bottoms in and they are SUPER comfortable. I plan to wear it with multiple colored tops.

14481153_130521160000Haha it totally looks like I am just posting underwear on the blog. Oh well. So, I am not crazy about cherries or red, BUT this has little ties with cherry print and I have a top at home with a cherry print, so the red cherry print wins.

The Gap

I am a Gap girl. Say what you will about it. The Gap has gone through it’s ups and downs. Once, our source for carpenter jeans, gray hoodies and Dream perfume back in the day . Winter seasons with just absolutely hideous sweaters. The Gap has been judged harshly through out the years and I have remained loyal. Designer jeans don’t hold a candle to my trusty pairs from the Gap. I love their scarves, socks, heck – I even love their underwear! So, it was no surprise to me that I walked in to the Gap on a recent lunch hour and left with three Hawaiian-ready items for aroung $30.

These shorts were $7.97 and are more neon-pink in real life.

cn6442560

These printed denim pups set me back $11.97. They fit SO good.
cn6286584

Lastly, I couldn’t leave without these rose-gold leather flip flops for $9,99 (they were the last pair). I mean. They’re rose gold.

336f926f6588975bc6ab83594837fd05On an un-related Haul for Hawaii note, I picked up this body mist from Victoria’s Secret because it’s one of my absolute favorites and I need it in my life.

They had a one day sale on all their fragrance sprays so I paid $10 for this sucker, they are normally $25. Just call me the discount diva! …Or not, because that makes me look like one of those crazies on Extreme Couponing.

2013 Fall Reads

Yo yo yo internet “Finer Things Club” members!

Only 3 books have weaseled themselves into my hands over the past couple of months and frankly, I feel quite lazy.

I blame Netflix.

Here they are!

1. Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin

6a00b8ea0716b01bc000e398a04b730004-500pi

I am actually very surprised I haven’t read all of this author’s books. I mean, the covers are shades of pastels. The names are cute. Where have I been?My sister lent me “Something Borrowed” (haha) when I was in Kennewick for her wedding. Very appropriate. So basically, the main character has an affair with her best friend’s fiance. Part of me wanted to slam it down or throw it in the trash.  I was disgusted at the behavior of these two individuals, sneaking around and lying for their own mutual satisfaction. I felt for the best friend, despite the author’s attempts to make me hate her. However, like most things that come in baby-pink packaging, everything turned out okay. Apparently it is a movie too? Again – where have I been?!

2. The Midewife of Venice by Roberta Rich

midwife-of-venice2

Oooh, I luuurved this book. I read it in 3 sessions, over the course of probably 5 days. All I wanted to do was read this book. I thought about while pedaling nowhere on the elliptical. I had dreams about it. I found myself talking about it to the checker at Safeway. This book is set in Venice during the sixteenth century and follows a young Jewish mid-wife named Hannah. She is the best of her trade in all of Venice, but her faith only allows her to deliver other Jewish babies. Her husband is a prisoner in a foreign land and in order to pay his bail, she agrees to deliver the baby of a Christian noble-man’s wife. Each page builds in suspense and the every chapter quickly crescendos into the ultimate cliff hanger. Each more dramatic than the previous. My only wish would be that this book had a sequel.

3. French Lessons by Ellen Sussman

9554832

I really enjoyed this cheeky little book about Paris and love. The book is split up in sections and focuses on the relationships of three french tutors and their pupils for the day. The characters are interesting and the dialogue is witty. Relationships. Sex. Affairs of the heart. (MUST LEARN FRENCH!)

So that’s it. Bryan and I leave for Hawaii in less than 48 hours where I will voraciously read on the beach in between sips of daiquiri 🙂

‘Til then.

In My Head – Wedding Photo Edition

HI.photo (2)

Lately my life has been neither extraordinary or ordinary, really. I’m stuck somewhere in between. I feel a bit whelmed, as  described here. As I mentioned in my previous post, Bryan and I are making a large purchase and as a result, my serotonin levels have been suffering. Coupled with the fact that I am also planning a wedding has made my brain into a 24-hour-a-day, non-stop machine. With no off switch.

Usually, when I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me I drink a little vodka and buy lipstick. This routine has now become totally blasé. I find myself needing just two simple things. The first thing keeping my mind in the sane category is maintaining a neat and tidy home. I feel the need to banish crumbs, vacuum on the hour and take out the trash when it’s a quarter full. Perhaps it’s the sight of the perfectly proportionate mist from the Windex bottle kissing the hairspray stains on the  mirror. The soft thud of the Honey Nut Cheerios I have swept up into the dustpan hitting the garbage can liner. My worries are wiped away and taken out with the trash. I LOVE IT.

The second theraputic means, I am doing right now! Spewing my thoughts onto the interwebs, in a journal, on a paper towel, WHEREVER – has always calmed me down. List making is another good one. So it is here, where I will attempt to bring solace to my unrelenting case of the worries.

Now it is time to talk about wedding photographers, k?

I have gone through a bit of a journey here. Searching the Wedding Wire directories got me lost and confused in the foreign land of tiered “packages”, photo-journalistic styles and high-res/low-res discs. I know the difference, btw, but where I start getting all messy boots is when I begin to compare one photo to another.

Which is better? How important is a photographer? I quickly learned the answer:

VERY

Another annoying habit of mine is figuring out what “style” is fitting. Trends like the Pinteresty washed-out look, to the use of fancy wide-angle lenses and crazy contrasting brings up tough questions. Which is “us”? Which is timeless?

I looked at a million pictures and made a few phone calls. It’s kind of like online dating. YEAH. Where’s the match.com for people to meet their wedding photographers?

Of course (especially with me) price plays another huge factor in this decision. Photography costing upwards of 6-7K these days, it’s no wonder people lose their sh*t over weddings. Yes, it’s your wedding day and hopefully, (unlike 50% of the population) you will only have one. When else will you hire a brigade of (for lack of a better word) minions to order around to do  your makeup, curl your hair and let your dress out another inch because you couldn’t say no to all that pie?

Wedding websites suggest 10-12% of your budget should go towards photography. But with $7,000 price tags, how many of us are shelling out 60 grand for our weddings? I’ll tell ya one thing: WE’RE NOT.

If it’s not already painstakingly clear, I needed help. I dreamed of a wedding photographer consultant – a fairy godmother of sorts, who will wave her magic wand and poof! A smiley, perfectly groomed wedding photographer would appear and take the perfect mix of photos. All while capturing the moment and keeping an immaculate schedule.

Too much to ask?

Luckily, such a person does exist (thanks Alisha!). I am beyond thrilled to have made this decision. Now, onto the other 712,1238912 decisions.

ALSO – More news on the big purchase is coming soon, promise.

September Favorites + 1 Un-Favorite

Happy October Beautiful People!

Fall 09 140

I think I shall try to make this a monthly thing, n’est pas?

So, Bry and I are kindof making a large purchase in the near future… Hence, my pennies are presh. I don’t like to waste em on items like chalky eye shadow or lipstick which makes me look like an alien. I do m’research. I hunt for bargains and have googled “(insert makeup brand here) Coupon Code” more times than you can imagine. Here are the standouts from my September beauty regime and, life.

Makeup

Cailyn Tinted Lip Balm in Big Apple

500mi-hlgrgsr28px0gdd

I got this in my September Ipsy, which I am in love with. These little bags evoke squeals of joy when I spot that familiar pink metallic packaging peeking out from behind the wad of junk mail in our mailbox. But this past month, I got absolute poop. No other way to say it. POOP. The only saving grace was this tinted lip balk which I have found myself reaching for on more than one occasion. It’s moisturizing properties are questionable but the color is SO fetch.

The Rocket Volume Mascara.

14328368_121216070000

This mascara is just wonderful. Unlike most I’ve tried, it can stand on it’s own with 2-3 coats. Most of the time, I have to combine three mascaras to get the results that this alone can give me. The only drawback would be the struggle to get it off…see my thoughts at the end of this post on my failed attempt to do so.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Iced Mocha

153

I really like this line of jumbo pencils from NYX and have a few different colors (Milk is another great one to have). I find that I use them most as shadow bases or smudged underneath my lower lash line and kinda smoked out. The colors are gorgeous and the shade range is unbeatable.

Wet’n’Wild Mega Last Lipstick in 24 Carrot Gold

300 (1)

Omg. I think I might be slightly obsessed with this color. I have never experimented with orange-toned lip colors and I must say, I am in love. It will look great in Hawaii when I’m not so ghastly white (we leave in about 2 weeks, yay!).

Beauty

BIOTIN.

biotin_1

Aw, girl! Seriously just start taking this. Today. It takes a while to start noticing the effects, but my hair has grown faster than ever before and my nails? WAY stronger and thicker. Plus, it comes with the added bonus of freaking out your fiance when he asks about them and you tell them they are prenatal vitamins (not a total lie since biotin is in prenatals). Muahahhhahaaaha.

Wet’n’Wild Fergie Nail Polish in Velvet Lounge.

300

For the WSU game, I decided to really get all Coug’ed out with some nail art. I got this color along with a gray and created some intense Fangirl nails. I really like this crimson because it’s not too deep and not too cherry.

#latetotheparty

Yes, it’s worth the hype and the $20 price tag. My above pictured new BB and I will have a long, faithful relationship. Free of latex and full of dewy-faced makeup days.

Hurr Curr

Tresemme Heat-Tamer Spray

450

As of late, I have actually been blow-drying AND straightening my hair. Gasp! I know this a major no-no when trying to grow Rapunzel-like locks but I am SO sick of looking like a ragamuffin. Since I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week, I think I’m still okay.

Bed Head After Party

140022

From this oddly-shaped bottle, comes one of my all-time favorite finishing products. I have used this stuff since high school and for darn good reason. One pump provides a perfectly “piecey” look, ala Jen Aniston. I run it from the middle to the bottom of my hair, focusing more of the product at the ends.

Fashions

My Michael Kors rose gold watch has been a regular guest on my wrist these days. Annnd now I want everything in rose-gold…

STRIPES. Just in general. Bry pointed out that almost everything I have bought lately has been stiped in some way, shape or form.

Randoms

Sourdough. Bread. With Chunky Skippy peanut butter, or this cheese or really, anything.

FranzSourdough-copy

My Scentsy. Not only do I love me some candles, but I also have a small obsession with my Scentsy. (Insert Cathy comic strip here) This is my favorite “brick” as of late:

UN-FAVORITE

SO. I ran out of my favorite makeup wipes about a month ago. Then, when I was perusing the aisles of Wal-Mart for a Milani blush I have YET to find, I noticed this:

0007278505864_500X500

Innocent enough. Looks like the Neutrogena version, right? I picked er up for a mere $3.50 and happily applied this to my eyes each night to remove my Rocket glue mascara. It worked great! So, I continued each consecutive evening. After a week or so, I noticed my eyes became super itchy every night around 5:30. Did I change anything? NO. I kept on using the stuff, since clearly, it was doing it’s job and just itched the bejesus outta my eyes. Then…EUREKA! I stopped using the remover and consequently – my eyes stopped itching! It was a Christmas miracle, or maybe it was me not being an idiot anymore. Not sure which. Anyways, this product did it’s job nicely, but obviously I had some kind of allergic reaction to it, thus making it a resounding FAIL.

What have you been loving, or un-loving this month?

The Liebster Award

Well color me purple, there’s a sofa in here for two I got nominated for a Liebster Award!

liebsteraward

What the heck is a Liebster Award, you may ask?

“The Liebster Blog Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. The Meaning: Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome.”

I was kindly nominated by the lovely and talented Paige! Merci beacoup 🙂

And the rules…

  • You must link the person who has nominated you.
  • You must share 11 random facts about yourself.
  • You must answer the 11 Liebster questions given to you by the nominee.
  • You must pick 11 bloggers under 200 followers to be nominated for the award.
  • You must come up with 11 questions for your nominees to answer.
  • You must go to their blogs and notify them that you nominated them!

Here are my 11 Random Facts. FEAST YOUR EYES!

  1. My elbows hyper-extend. I don’t think is terribly uncommon but it looks pretty gnarly because my arms are quite veiny and white.
  2. I used to play the clarinet in high school and was also in choir. I can still play a little and sing in the car on the daily.
  3. One of my biggest pet peeves are check-writers. You know the type. Lug out their GIANT wallet and painstakingly balance their checkbooks while standing in line. WHO balances their checkbook anymore?! Hat tip if you balance your checkbook NOT standing in line at the grocery store.
  4. I am a die hard Lord of the Rings fangirl and wore a shirt that says “FRODO LIVES” to the openings. Nerd Alert!
  5. The first makeup item I can remember buying (besides bubblegum Lip Smacker) was a pressed powder from Maybelline.
  6. I was 5’10” in 8th grade. Read: NOBODY asked me to dance.
  7. I am attracted to all things cotton candy, coconut and birthday cake scented.
  8. I am not a natural blonde. I KNOW. I know.
  9. The largest amount of money I have ever spent at once was paying off my student loans.
  10. I can walk very fast.  Like Michael Flately Lord of the Dance fast.
  11. When I was little, I was bow-legged, had a killa pot-belly and a MULLET.

Here are the 11 Questions that Paige asked:

1. Why did you start your blog?

I wanted to learn WordPress because of a job I was at. I was editing and moderating blogs all the live long day, so I figured I may as well learn this thing and get a little something out of it for myself . Originally, I wanted a way  to store all of my fiance and I’s stories and recipes while living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It has now become my sole creative outlet. I write what I want and basically…I love it.

2. What’s the one beauty thing you absolutely suck at or hate doing?

Oh law, I could name quite a few here. Blow drying my hair! I obviously don’t suck at this, but I just hate doing it. I usually overheat like a menopausal woman and end up with a mess of tangled hair. Second place would easily go to my arch nemesis: liquid eyeliner.

3. What is the one thing you have to have in your purse/handbag at all times?

For a little while I had a pair of disposable underwear in my purse from Victoria’s Secret. My sis gave it to me a while back with a look that said “You never know”. More seriously, I guess I always have to have anti-bacterial gel from BBW because again – you never know.

4. If you read fashion magazines, what’s your favorite & why?

VOGUE is always fun to read. Right now I am into Bridal Magazines because I am engaged! Gah!!

5. What’s your favorite animal & why?

Chihuahua. Don’t say you want to kick them. They are incredibly cute and funny-looking at the same time. They do really funny things and their BM’s are teensy. What’s not to love?

6. What’s your favorite hobby or pastime?

Reading! By far. I also enjoy hiking or walking…one can be the other, you know 🙂

7. If you had to read one book for the rest of your life what would it be & why?

Babysitter’s Club #7: Claudia and Mean Janine. Bahahahhaaaa. I kid. Probably Great Expectations or something classy like that.

8. Do you like YouTube beauty & fashion vloggers? If so who is your favorite & why?

I don’t just like them. I LOVE them. My favorite of all time is Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter. She is SO funny.

9. If you had to pick one person to be stuck with you on a desert island, who would you pick & why?

The fiance Bryan comes to mind first, because well, I love him so much. Secondly, Rainn Wilson. Or Dwight K. Shrute. Either/or. We would talk Battle Star Galactica  and solve math problems using our calculator watches.

10. Since it is almost Halloween, what’s your spookiest experience?

Spookiest? Well, a legit SCARY experience would have to be when someone broke into our house when I was in 5th grade. 3 cop cars came. It was maje.

What is one moment on your blog you are really proud of? It could be starting your blog or it could be that one photo in that one post…just one moment that made you said, “Damn self…you did good.”

I did the Slim Fast diet before our cruise in Mexico AND I posted a pic in my swim suit so I suppose I’m proud of that post. Please note: I am NOT a dieter. I eat carbs and drink beer. I just wanted to “tighten” a bit before a week in Mexico.  On the writing front,  I have yet to publish a post I have already written about being an “older” bride and once that goes live, I’ll be pretty darn proud of that one. It has been hard to write because I feel like to absolute last person on earth to get married. And no, I’m not being dramatic or unrealistic :).

GO!

The Autumn Tag

Much thanks to Kate for tagging me!

Fall is hurr and I couldn’t be more excited.

autumn tag

  1. Favorite thing about it? Wrapping up in blankets, Brach’s Autumn Mix (the candy corn, indian corn and pumpkins one), crunchy leaves and (dare I say it?) football! Too many.
  2. Favorite drink? Starbucks Chai. Mmmmm!
  3. Favorite scent/candle? Leaves from Bath and Body Works! Pumpkin Cupcake would be a close second.
  4. Best lipstick? Er…Mac Creme Cup. I know it’s not a darker shade but I truly wear this color every day.
  5. Go to moisturizer? I need to be better about this! I still love the Origins Vitazing for underneath my makeup. Body Shop body butter for my body is just KILLA.
  6. Go to colors for the eyes? HANDS DOWN my Stila ‘In the Light’ palette. I left this at a hotel two weeks ago and almost broke down in tears. Luckily, they found it and shipped it back to me for free! The colors are buttery soft and there is a great mix of shimmer and matte shades. I find I can create any look with this baby.
  7. Favorite music or band/singer to listen to? Anything Disney, per usual.
  8. Favorite outfit to wear (i.e. boots and scarf combo)? Definitely jeans, ballet flats or flat riding boots and a tank with a baggy grandpa cardigan. Can’t go wrong!
  9. Autumn treat? Besides treating myself to multiple baskets of wings on Sundays…I’m really wanting the new Rockateur blush by Benefit. Can’t help myself when it comes to anything rose gold!

YAHOO for fall! Check out Kate’s blog if you’re in the mood for awesome reviews and all types of products. She is awesome!

Honorary Coug

Football has been the theme of these past couple weekends. Other theme contenders: deep fried foods, beer, sweat or a combination of the three. My inner sports fanatic was unleashed. Normally being the type of football spectator who is more interested in the glitter on the helmets than the score of the game, I have definitely surprised myself.

On Friday, we traveled to Bryan’s alma-mater WSU for a weekend of college fun. And fun, we had. The drive over was quite the adventure.

Highlights include:

  • Bry and Joe in the backseat car-dancing to their hearts delight.
  • Corbin’s and my eye-rolls after said car-dance moves.
  • Rolling across the Palouse, during what may have been the most beautiful sunset ever.
  • This barn.

Once we reached Pullman it was ON. We stopped at Sella’s for their epic calzones and 64 oz. beers. Because they were necessary.

Gettin Fratty

We checked in to the hotel and rendezvoused with our posse – Leann, Melissa, Little M, and Kyle. It was then decided that it was time for THE COUG.  A WSU institution, The Coug is a virtual melting pot where students from all corners of campus collide into one sweaty, beer-drinking mass of crimson-and-gray-wearing fanatics.

IMG_1441

IMG_1444

SO cute, we are.

Having already consumed one or four a few more beers m’self, I took er relatively easy. I wore my crimson. I perspired. I was well on my way to inevitable Coug-dom. We called it a night around midnight and cabbed it back to the Holiday Inn for a good night’s sleep in preparation for an epic day of WSU fun.

The morning kicked off with another WSU-Alum rite-of-passage, the Holiday Inn free continental breakfast. Sugary fruit loops, bagels chalked full of preservatives . Cinnamon rolls so perfectly drizzled with bright white icing that it could only be plucked straight from the clear packaging where it lay nestled, frozen amongst hundreds of clones in a cardboard box.

My heaven.

We played with babies Els and M in the hallway. I could seriously play with these gals everyday.

After a twist of the curling iron and a set of whispy half lashes, we headed over to Crimson & Gray where school spirit is the name of the game. This store has anything and everything Coug. Camo coug. Pink coug. 1/2 Coug, 1/2 Husky. ANYTHING.

After that, we packed up the car and headed over to campus for a much-anticipated tour.

IMG_1446

Cutest Tour Guide.

I saw The Cub and subsequently the PEP BAND. Oh law. I luuurve me some pep bands. Or marching bands. Any band will do.

IMG_1450

IMG_1451

Music Building – Woo hoo!

We then descended upon the majesty that is Bryan’s fraternity. I have to admit, ABC Family’s Greek left my expectations for what a fraternity looks like a bit skewed. Visions of deep, mahogany walls dressed in masculine oil paintings of brothers from yesteryear faded into bare concrete, boy smells and a bowl of Captain Crunch left sitting in a window sill. While Theta Chi was  far from a pure paradigm of my brain’s version of a fraternity, one thing was painstakingly clear. Fun is and was had in this house. Memories were made and lifelong friendships were formed. Which to me is far more important than boring guys in navy sport coats and surfaces reeking of Lemon Pledge.

Then, Melissa was kind enough to take me to her sorority Chi Omega. As I walked in the doors, I was all “Elle Woods? Are you here?”. I was elated that one of the members volunteered to give us a house tour and provide me (the sorority-girl who never was) a tiny glimpse inside a real sorority.

Twas more than I could have ever imagined. Favorites included the “getting ready rooms” where girls are provided a closet, dresser and day bed in shared rooms where they can store all their bits & pieces. The makeup-obsessed, wanna-be beauty pageant contestant inside of me was shrieking in excitement but I think I managed to contain my enthusiasm because really, the idea of these rooms is quite pragmatic.

After our house tour concluded, we thanked our lovely tour guide and I gave serious thought to getting a face lift so I could go back to college just to be in a sorority.

Walking back to The Coug I couldn’t help but notice a couple of startling trends among today’s female youth, The high-waisted short and huge t-shirts made in to dresses. Let me start by saying that just because you like a trend does not (by any means) mean that you should go ahead and wear it.

We have all fallen victim to such trends and I have resigned to the fact that I, like so many others, had a mullet.

High-wasted shorts absolutely swarmed the WSU campus and lemme just tell you, it was as if the girls from “Hey Dude” were reincarnated.  Oh lord. Hey Dude. For all you Generation Y’ers out there: HOW MUCH DO YOU MISS HEY DUDE?

heydude

I blame Pinterest for the XXL t-shirts fashioned into corset-style lace-up tube dresses. COME ON ladies, stop abusing Pinterest.

Once we grew hungry, we all ordered lunch. A Coug burger + fries for Bryan and obviously a corn dog for me.  Fried to a deep golden brown and dipped in ranch. Oh sweet baby Jesus, it was GOOD.

“Hey Mom – over here!!”

IMG_1469

She might be the cutest thing in the world.

Not surprisingly, the Cougs beat southern Utah 48-10. We determined the celebration would be held at the hotel with a massive pizza and beer.

Our hotel room party was quite the rager. Complete with baby monitors and tired soon-to-be 30 somethings. My bestie Holly and her boyfriend Matt (who live in Moscow, ID) joined the mix and good ol’ fashioned hotel-room fun was had.

The next morning we said farewell to Kyle, Melissa and little M and hit the road, Seattle bound.

A little bit heavier and a lot Cougier. Til next time Pullman!
