Bookworm Update

Time for another book update ya’ll!

Here’s what I’ve been reading:

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham

I stumbled upon this at my parents house during Christmas break and read it super fast. It’s basically exactly what you’d expect. Since I had already seen “Christmas With the Kranks” I knew what I was in for. Although parts of it kindof infuriated me – I thought it was extremely cute and pretty funny.  It was a perfect, feel-good Christmasy read.

Mercy by Jodi Picoult

This Picoult book deals with the interesting and controversial topic (as all of Picoult’s novels do) of euthanasia. The book was sad, yet the characters were very fun to read about. True to form, Picoult challenged my views and brought to life a stirring relationship in which a man loved his wife so much, he was willing to end her life.  I really liked this one and was left wishing it would go on.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Whoa – this book rocks. I almost want to leave it at that and just tell you to go out and read it now, but I won’t ;).  This book details the life of a young girl raised by two parents who are very odd, to say the least. The family moved around the United States, doing the “skedaddle” every time there was a problem with the law or CPS. Although the family lived in poverty, filth and starvation, the three kids aspire to make something of themselves. This book is beyond inspiring.

Cooking for Mr.Right by Susan Volland

What a fun read this was! After I read the back jacket of this book, I realized I must read it. It’s basically the “My Best Friend’s Wedding” story line although swap Julia Roberts for a Seattle chef and Cameron Diaz for a goody-goody school teacher. Also, since it took place in Seattle I loved it even more!

Right now I’m reading My Sister’s Keeper, which is another Jodi Picoult novel. Of course, I’ll fill you in on the deets once I’m finished.

Happy reading!!

2011 Fall Reads

I’m a total bookworm.

It’s time for a book update. I know, thrilling.

But honestly – NOTHING beats a good book. You get to use your imagination, become smarter and look cute in your reading glasses, it’s a good thing :-).

Here are the books I enjoyed this fall:

Catch me if You Can by Frank Abagnale Jr.

This book was incredibly interesting. If you’ve seen the movie, you know the general plot. It was mind boggling how ballsy this kid was. There were quite a few jaw-droppers while reading this. I highly recommend for a quick, easy and fun read.

The Debutante Divorcee by Plum Sykes

I like these books purely for the outfit descriptions. Brands I’ve never heard of. Trends I never knew existed. The life of the Manhattan super-rich.  A life I will never know. Totally fun to read.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult is hands down one of my favorite authors. Her writing style makes the characters seem so real and alive, like someone you’ve met or actually know. She always writes about really thought-provoking subjects and sometimes controversial subjects, which is awesome because I end up learning loads from her books.

Nineteen Minutes is about a school shooting, with close parallels to the events of Columbine. She tells the story from each characters point of view,  most interestingly, the shooter. She delves into the psyche of these high school students to uncover the true impact of bullying, cliques and friendships. I also really enjoyed learning about the responsibilities and perils of being a judge as well as a judge’s daughter. This book is heavy and emotional but completely worth it. The mark of a good book, in my opinion is, does it make you think? Does it challenge a belief? This book certainly meets that criteria and leaves you with a sense of hope in the end.

A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard

Okay – so this is the memoir of Jaycee Dugard, the girl who was kidnapped when she was 11 and held hostage in a backyard for 18 years. A Stolen Life  is the polar opposite of a “light read”. It is heavy. Many times through out this book, I had to simply set it down, walk away and spend 15 minutes alone. As I read this book, my mind automatically placed myself in her situation. I physically shuttered through out the book. Jaycee tells the story exactly as it happened and doesn’t leave out any details. In the book, she will write a section, for example “The Studio”, tell us what happened and then goes on to reflect on how she feels about  it now that she is free. I highly recommend this book for it’s amazing story of survival.

The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult

This book was awesome. Not my favorite in the way of Picoult books, but excellent nonetheless. Maybe it was the subject matter…rape…it honestly gives me goosebumps to even think about. So horrible. I loved the relationship between the family members in this one as well.

Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult

This Jodi Picoult novel also doesn’t fail to disappoint. This time, we are thrown into the life of an American family dealing with osteogenesis imperfecta. Google it for all the details, but basically it’s when a human is born with super brittle bones that break very easily. People that have OI either die right after they’re born or live a life where they’ll likely break hundreds of bones, never walk and not exceed 3 feet in height. This book depicts a family dealing with a child with this disorder. Again, we hear stories from all members of the family and also a few outsiders. This book also addresses issues like cutting and bulemia. This one is incredibly compelling and as always, really makes you think.

I am currently reading the The Shadow Wife, by Diane Chamberlain per a recommendation from this awesome blogger.

Next on the list:

  • Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult – PUMPED about this one!
  • Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
  • Bossypants by Tina Fey
  • How to Love an American Man by Kristine Gasbarre
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

What are you reading lately?

Thrifting is the New Black

Yesterday I went thrift shopping with my homegirls Holly and Jess.

Attempting to keep to our tight budgets, we smartly shopped the aisles of Jackson Hole thrift stores. Namely, Browse ‘n’ Buy and Beautiful, Thrifty and Rich. Personally, I am a fan of any name that replaces “and” with “n”. It’s just better.

Another good one is “lil”, but that’s neither here nor there.

I scored at The Browser, purchasing two books for my upcoming trip to Mehico. The first is “Catch Me if You Can”. The book that inspired the movie and written my Frank Abagnale.

We'll See

The other is “Debutante Divorcee”, by Plum Sykes. I’ve read Bergdorf Blondes and was entertained so I figured what the hey.

And, the cover is pink.

Like a Moth to the Flame

I also have a Jodi Picoult novel, in case things get rough with these two hail marys.

Other treasures (or “traysures” as my Dad says) included a cute summery hat for Jess and a dip-warmer for Holly. Holly LOVES her dips. In fact, we once organized a dip party. The theme was dips. We played that song that goes, “I put my hand upon your hip, when I dip you dip we dip” on repeat.

I swear more people came

Another item I picked up? TOMS.

Bossy

They were never-been-worn and the color was super cute. The shoes themselves however? Ugly. I guess the only saving grace is that by purchasing them, a small child somewhere has got a pair of shoes…oh wait…they were second-hand. So I guess that makes me a wanna-be philanthropist with $15 thrifted Toms.

Oh well, at least people will still walk by me and think, “There goes an awesome girl with trendy shoes for a good cause and a nice dye-job.”

#Win.

Now I must figure out a dress for Bryan’s fraternity brother, Spencer’s wedding in Seattle. All the Seattle girls will probably be clad in trendy color blocked frocks (uber trendy at the mome) while I will be rocking an older sister cast-off circa 2004 if I don’t figure out a solution.

Worn this baby maybe 2478259 times

After the wedding, we will be jetting off to the land of chihuahuas (babies) aka Mexico. So this week is gonna be a whirlwind.

Other to-do’s include:

  • Apply self-tanner nightly
  • Try to repair pedicure from 1 week ago to avoid getting another pedicure
  • Paint nails with light pink Essie polish *To be purchased
  • Get roots touched up
  • Go to gym and improve body
  • Pack suitcase (Bryan and I are sharing one for Mexico)
  • Clean home

Don’t you love coming home to a sparkling clean apartment after a long trip?

Now if only there was a way to have warm, peanut butter cookies waiting  upon arrival as well as a stiff gimlet.

And maybe a What Not to Wear marathon. Just sayin :-).
